Microsoft Speech Server is used in conjunction with the SASDK and alows businesses to enable existing and new Web applications to be accessible by speech. This provides an integrated Web and voice infrastructure to create centralized applications with both speech and visual access. MSS contains components for deploying telephony and multimodal (voice/visual) applications. MSS combines Web technologies, speech-processing services, and telephony capabilities into a single system.

MSS runs on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and includes additional security features and the ability to integrate into an enterprise telophony system. Speech recognition and speech synthesis applications can be accessed by all types of phones and newer mobile devices such as Pocket PC and other devices. MSS extends existing Web applications with the industry open standard Speech Application Language Tags - SALT.
